The early 19th century brought about a gained popularity for “Gartenzwerge” (German for “garden gnome”) in the United States.
The statues, under 3’ (36 inches), represented protection and fertility of nature. Taken from the 1927 Anniversary Plate collection, we see the gnome making friends with the Prince of Frogs to help ensure good luck and bountiful harvests.
